Emergency dental treatment in Prague: Fast and professional help at Dobrý Dent

When is it necessary to seek emergency dental treatment?
You should seek emergency dental care without delay if you experience any of the following symptoms or problems:
- Severe, sudden, or persistent toothache: It may be sharp, throbbing, shooting, or dull. It often gets worse at night, when biting, or in response to hot or cold stimuli.
- Swelling in the face, gums, or around the jaw: Swelling is often a sign of ongoing inflammation or infection (such as an abscess) that requires immediate attention.
- Tooth or jaw injury: A broken tooth, chipped tooth, displaced tooth (luxation), or completely knocked out tooth (avulsion) require prompt intervention to maximize the chance of saving the tooth. This also includes injuries to the soft tissues in the mouth (tongue, lips, gums).
- Lossed dental filling (filling) or crown/bridge: Can cause tooth sensitivity, a sharp edge irritating the tongue or cheek and increases the risk of further tooth damage or infection.
- Unstoppable bleeding from the mouth: Whether after a tooth extraction, an injury or without an obvious cause, heavy bleeding requires professional treatment.
- Symptoms of a dental abscess: In addition to swelling and pain, a lump on the gum (fistula) may appear, from which pus may ooze, an unpleasant taste in the mouth or even an increased temperature or fever.
- Complications after a previous dental procedure: Excessive pain that does not respond to common analgesics, persistent heavy bleeding or significant swelling for several days after the procedure.
- Sudden high tooth sensitivity: If it appears suddenly and is very intense.
- Gingivitis around the erupting wisdom tooth (pericoronitis): It is manifested by pain, swelling of the gum behind the last tooth, sometimes difficulty opening the mouth.
Remember that a timely visit to the dentist for acute problems can prevent the development of more serious problems and often save your tooth.
Why not underestimate acute dental problems and postpone treatment?
Postponing a visit to the dentist for acute problems can have serious consequences. Pain is a signal that something is wrong, and ignoring this signal can lead to:
- Worsening pain: The original problem can quickly worsen, leading to even more intense and difficult to manage pain.
- Spread of infection: Untreated inflammation (e.g. tooth decay, pulpitis, abscess) can spread to surrounding tissues, jawbone, and in severe cases, to other parts of the body through the bloodstream, which can have life-threatening consequences (e.g. sepsis, Ludwig’s angina).
- Tooth loss: What could have been originally treatable with conservative dentistry (filling, endodontics), can lead to the need for tooth extraction if postponed.
- More complicated and expensive treatment: The longer the problem lasts, the more complex and time-consuming its solution tends to be and more expensive.
- Impact on overall health: Chronic inflammation in the oral cavity is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other systemic diseases.
Therefore, it is crucial to seek professional help as soon as possible for any acute dental problems. At Dobrý Dent, we are ready to help you quickly and effectively.
How does acute treatment work at Dobrý Dent? Your comfort and health come first
When you contact us with an acute problem, we try to offer you the closest possible treatment date. We understand the urgency of the situation and the priority is to quickly relieve pain and stabilize the condition. The course of treatment usually includes the following steps:
- Initial consultation and diagnosis: First, we carefully listen to your problems and the history of the problem. This is followed by a thorough clinical examination of the affected area. We often use modern imaging methods for an accurate diagnosis. The standard is an intraoral X-ray, which shows us the condition of the tooth and the surrounding bone. In more complex cases, such as injuries, suspected complicated inflammations or before planning more complex procedures, we can use our advanced 3D CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). This device provides a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures, which allows for absolutely accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Immediate pain relief: Our priority is to relieve you of pain as quickly as possible. To do this, we use local anesthesia. At Dobrý Dent, we use the STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia System) system as standard – a computer-controlled application of anesthetic. This system allows for a very slow and controlled application, which minimizes the discomfort associated with the injection and ensures effective and often localized anesthesia of only the necessary area, not the entire half of the face. Your comfort is key for us.
- The treatment itself: The type of procedure depends on the diagnosis. The goal of acute treatment is primarily to solve the urgent problem, eliminate the cause of the pain and prevent further complications. This may include:
- Opening the tooth and removing the inflamed or dead pulp (the first stage of endodontic treatment).
- Incision (cutting) and drainage of the abscess to relieve pus and pressure.
- Application of a soothing or healing inlay and making a temporary filling.
- Treatment and possible splinting of the tooth after an injury.
- Adjusting sharp edges of a broken tooth.
- Installing a fallen crown or bridge (if possible).
- In some cases, tooth extraction may be necessary if the damage is too extensive or the prognosis is uncertain.
We use an operating microscope for many of these procedures, especially for endodontics or when looking for cracks. This provides us with multiple magnification and perfect illumination of the working field, which allows for maximum precision, thoroughness and gentleness of the treatment. We see details that are invisible to the naked eye. For quick and accurate impression making, for example for temporary work, we can also use our 3D intraoral scanner, which replaces unpleasant impression materials.
- Further treatment plan: Acute treatment often only solves the immediate problem. After the condition has stabilized, we will explain in detail what the next step will be for a definitive solution to the problem (e.g. completion of endodontic treatment, making a definitive filling, crown, bridge or implant). We will plan further visits with you.
- Instructions and recommendations: After the treatment, we will provide you with all the necessary information about follow-up care, and we will prescribe painkillers or antibiotics if necessary.
The most common causes of acute dental problems and their solutions at Dobrý Dent
There are a number of reasons why acute pain or other dental problems can occur. Here are some of the most common situations we encounter in our practice and how we deal with them:
Pulpitis
Cause: Most often deep tooth decay that has penetrated to the nerve (pulp) inside the tooth. It can also occur after an injury or tooth preparation.
Symptoms: Intense, often throbbing pain that can be spontaneous (occurs on its own, often at night) or triggered by stimuli (heat, cold, sweet). In the initial stage, the pain may only be cold, later also hot, and eventually the pain may be permanent.
Solution at Dobrý Dent: The acute solution is to open the tooth, remove the inflamed pulp and apply a healing insert to soothe it. This procedure, the first phase of endodontic treatment (“canal cleaning”), brings immediate pain relief. Using an operating microscope allows us to precisely clean the entire root canal system. Subsequently, the treatment must be completed by definitively filling the canals and reconstructing the tooth crown (filling, crown).
Acute inflammation around the root of the tooth (acute periodontitis)
Cause: The infection from the dead pulp has spread through the root canal to the bone around the tip of the root. It may be a complication of untreated pulpitis or a flare-up of chronic inflammation (“pustule”).
Symptoms: Pain when biting or tapping on the tooth, a feeling of a “bulging” tooth, sometimes swelling of the gum or cheek in the area of the affected tooth. The tooth may no longer react to cold/hot.
Solution at Dobrý Dent: Treatment consists of opening and cleaning the root canals so that the inflammatory effusion can drain and the pressure is reduced. Sometimes it is necessary to perform a small surgical procedure (incision) to drain the pus from the swelling. CBCT examination will help us to precisely localize the extent of the inflammation. After the acute phase has subsided, endodontic treatment is completed.
Dental abscess
Cause: A limited cavity filled with pus, resulting from the spread of a bacterial infection from the tooth or gum.
Symptoms: Significant, often painful swelling of the gum or cheek, severe pain (may be throbbing), redness, sometimes a visible “bump” on the gum (fistula), from which pus may ooze. It may be accompanied by increased temperature, fatigue, swollen glands.
Solution at Dobrý Dent: The key is immediate drainage of the pus – either by opening the tooth (if the cause is a tooth), or by incision (cutting) of the abscess under local anesthesia. This will provide immediate relief from pressure and pain. Antibiotics are often necessary. Subsequently, the cause must be addressed – endodontic treatment or extraction of the affected tooth.
Broken or cracked tooth (tooth fracture)
Cause: Injury (fall, blow), biting on a hard object (stone, stone in food), weakening of the tooth with a large filling or decay.
Symptoms: Pain when biting, sensitivity to cold/hot, sharp edge irritating the tongue or cheek, visible crack or missing part of the tooth. The extent of the damage can vary – from breaking off a small part of the enamel to breaking the entire tooth including the root.
Solution at Dobrý Dent: Depends on the extent and location of the fracture. Small enamel breakage can be smoothed out or supplemented with a composite filling. Larger fractures may require an onlay, crown. If the fracture extends into the dental pulp, endodontic treatment is necessary. In some cases, especially with vertical root fractures, the prognosis of the tooth is poor and extraction is the solution. The 3D intraoral scanner helps us plan and make precise prosthetic restorations.
Failed dental filling or crown/bridge
Cause: Infection of the filling or crown, material fatigue, loosening of the cement, biting on something hard.
Symptoms: Tooth sensitivity to stimuli, unpleasant feeling in the mouth, sharp edges, aesthetic problem.
Solution at Dobrý Dent: It is necessary to check the condition of the tooth under the fallen restoration. If the tooth is healthy and the restoration is undamaged, it can sometimes be re-cemented. However, more often there is tooth decay, which needs to be removed and a new filling or crown made. In the acute phase, we can treat the tooth with a temporary filling or temporarily place a crown to prevent further damage and relieve sensitivity.

Prevention is the best medicine
Although we are here to help you with any acute dental problem, prevention is the best approach. Regular preventive check-ups (twice a year) allow you to detect incipient problems, such as tooth decay or gingivitis, before they develop into a painful acute condition. Equally important is regular professional dental hygiene, which removes tartar and plaque – the main causes of tooth decay and periodontitis. Consistent home dental care is a natural foundation.
If you already have a minor cavity or an old, unsuitable filling, do not postpone its treatment. Early repair is easier, faster and cheaper than dealing with acute complications. At Dobrý Dent, we will be happy to help you not only with acute problems, but also with comprehensive preventive care and a treatment plan for the long-term health of your teeth.
