Implant-Retained Restorations: A Stable and Aesthetic Solution to Tooth Loss

What are dental implants and how do they work?
A dental implant can be imagined as a small screw, most often made of biocompatible titanium. This material is very well accepted by the body and has the unique ability of so-called osseointegration – a solid connection with bone tissue. The implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth root. After a healing period, when the implant is firmly connected to the bone, it serves as an artificial root, to which a prosthetic replacement can then be attached – a crown, bridge or complete replacement.
The osseointegration process is key to the long-term success of the implant. The titanium surface of the implant stimulates bone cells to grow and adhere directly to the surface of the implant, creating an exceptionally strong and stable connection. This process usually takes several months, but the result is worth it – the implant becomes a full-fledged part of the jaw.
Types of restorations anchored on implants
Depending on the number of missing teeth and the individual needs of the patient, there are several types of restorations that can be fixed to implants:
- Single crown on implant: The ideal solution for the loss of one tooth. A so-called abutment (pillar) is placed on one inserted implant and an aesthetic ceramic crown is then fixed to it, which perfectly imitates the shape, size and color of the original tooth. The advantage is that the surrounding healthy teeth remain intact, unlike a classic bridge, where it is necessary to grind down the neighboring teeth.
- Implant-anchored bridge: If several teeth are missing next to each other, the gap can be bridged with a bridge fixed to two or more implants. The implants serve as pillars for the bridge, which replaces the missing teeth between them. This solution is again very stable and aesthetic and does not require grinding of healthy teeth. The number of implants required depends on the size of the gap and the condition of the bone.
- Implant-anchored complete denture (fixed or removable): For patients who have lost all their teeth in one or both jaws, implants represent a revolutionary change from traditional removable dentures.
- Fixed complete denture (All-on-4 / All-on-6): The entire arch of new teeth is firmly screwed onto 4 or 6 strategically placed implants. This denture is not removable, provides maximum stability during eating and speaking, and looks very natural. The patient feels like they have their own teeth.
- Removable denture anchored on implants (Overdenture): This is a removable prosthesis, which is much more stable than a classic prosthesis due to its anchoring on 2-4 implants using special locks (e.g. ball attachments, brackets). The patient can remove the prosthesis themselves for cleaning, but it is firmly fixed when worn and does not fall. It is a more comfortable and functional alternative to loose dentures.
Main advantages of implant-retained restorations
The decision for implant-supported restorations brings patients a number of significant benefits:
- Excellent stability and comfort: The restorations are firmly connected to the bone, do not wobble, do not fall out and allow for trouble-free biting of even harder foods. The feeling is almost indistinguishable from your own teeth.
- Restoration of full chewing function: Unlike removable dentures, which can limit your food choices, implants allow you to eat virtually anything.
- Top-notch aesthetics: Modern materials (especially ceramics) and precise manufacturing ensure that the restorations look completely natural and fit perfectly into your smile.
- Increase in self-confidence: A beautiful and functional smile has a positive effect on self-confidence and social interactions.
- Protection of surrounding teeth: When replacing a single tooth or a smaller gap, it is not necessary to grind adjacent healthy teeth, as is the case with classic bridges.
- Prevention of bone loss: Dental implants transmit chewing forces to the jawbone, similar to the roots of your own teeth. This stimulates bone and prevents bone loss (atrophy), which commonly occurs after tooth loss. Maintaining bone volume is important for maintaining facial shape and supporting soft tissues.
- Long-term durability: With proper care and regular check-ups, dental implants and dentures anchored on them can serve for many years, often even a lifetime. It is an investment in health and quality of life.
- Easy maintenance: Caring for dentures anchored on implants is similar to caring for your own teeth – it requires regular brushing, interdental brushes and flossing, and of course regular visits to a dental hygienist and dentist.
The process of making restorations on implants at Dobrý Dent
At our clinic Dobrý Dent in Prague 5, we emphasize an individual approach, precision and the use of the most modern technologies in each phase of treatment. The process typically includes the following steps:
- Introductory consultation and diagnostics: The first step is a thorough examination, assessment of the overall health and condition of the oral cavity. Modern diagnostics play a key role. We use 3D CBCT X-ray, which provides us with a detailed three-dimensional image of the jaws and allows us to accurately plan the placement of implants with respect to anatomical structures (nerves, blood vessels, cavities) and the quality and quantity of bone. This planning minimizes risks and increases the success of the procedure. We also use a 3D intraoral scanner to create a digital impression of the teeth without unpleasant impression materials. This digital model is used for precise planning and production of the final prosthetic work.
- Treatment planning: Based on the diagnostic data and your wishes, we will create an individual treatment plan. We will explain all the options, procedure, time schedule and financial requirements to you in detail. We will answer all your questions.
- Surgical phase – insertion of the implant(s): The actual insertion of the implant is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. At Dobrý Dent, we use the STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia) system – computer-controlled anesthesia, which ensures the most gentle and painless administration of anesthetic. The procedure is quick and minimally invasive thanks to precise planning using CBCT and the experience of our doctors. In some cases, bone augmentation may be necessary if there is not enough bone for stable anchorage of the implant.
- Healing period (osseointegration): After the implant is inserted, there is a healing period during which osseointegration occurs – the fusion of the implant with the bone. This period usually lasts 3 to 6 months, depending on the location and quality of the bone. During this time, the patient can be fitted with a provisional prosthesis.
- Prosthetic phase – fabrication of the prosthesis: After the implant has successfully healed, the prosthetic phase begins. Using a 3D intraoral scanner, we again obtain an accurate digital impression of the situation in the mouth. Based on this scan, the final crown, bridge or complete prosthesis is fabricated in the dental laboratory. When fitting and adjusting the prosthesis, we often use an operating microscope, which allows us to work with maximum precision and ensure perfect fit and aesthetics of the prosthesis.
- Final prosthesis fitting and instruction: The finished prosthesis is firmly attached to the implant(s). We check the bite, comfort and aesthetics. Finally, we will instruct you in detail on the proper care of your new prosthesis so that it serves you as long as possible.
- Regular check-ups and dental hygiene: Regular check-ups (usually every 6 months) and professional dental hygiene are essential for long-term success. During check-ups, we monitor the condition of the implants, surrounding tissues and the prosthesis itself.

Are you a good candidate for implants?
Most people with good overall health and healthy gums are suitable candidates for dental implants. An important factor is the sufficient amount and quality of jawbone to anchor the implant. Even in cases where the bone is not ideal, there are modern techniques for its supplementation (augmentation) that can allow implantation. Age is usually not an obstacle, the more important is the overall health. Smoking can negatively affect the healing and long-term success of implants. During the initial consultation at Dobrý Dent, we will carefully assess your specific situation and suggest the best solution.
Care of implant-supported restorations
The long-term success of your implant investment depends on consistent oral hygiene. Care is very similar to caring for your own teeth:
- Regular brushing (at least twice a day).
- Using interdental brushes and/or dental floss to clean the spaces around the implants and under the bridges.
- Regular visits to a dental hygienist (usually 2-4 times a year) for professional cleaning and checking the condition of the gums around the implants.
- Regular check-ups with a dentist (usually every 6 months) including X-rays to check the condition of the bone around the implants.
With proper care, you can ensure that your implant-supported restorations will serve you reliably for many years and you will maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.
