Dental Implants: Restore Confidence and Function to Your Smile

What are dental implants and how do they work?
A dental implant can be thought of as an artificial tooth root. It is a small screw, most often made of biocompatible titanium (a material that the human body accepts very well), which is surgically inserted directly into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth. Titanium has the unique ability of so-called osseointegration – a solid connection with bone tissue. After a certain healing period, when the implant fuses with the bone, an abutment (pillar) is attached to it and then the final prosthetic work – a crown, bridge or removable prosthesis. The result is a fully functional and aesthetically perfect tooth replacement that looks and functions like your own tooth.
This process ensures incredible stability and strength that far exceeds traditional methods of tooth replacement, such as bridges or removable dentures. The implant becomes a solid part of your jaw, which allows for the natural distribution of chewing forces and prevents bone loss that often occurs after tooth loss.
Advantages of dental implants over other solutions
Dental implants offer a number of undeniable advantages compared to conventional methods of tooth replacement:
- High aesthetics: Crowns placed on implants are indistinguishable from your own teeth. We can perfectly match the color, shape and size so that the result looks completely natural.
- Full functionality: Implants restore full chewing ability without restrictions. You can eat your favorite foods without worrying about the replacement shifting or loosening.
- Long-term durability: With proper care and regular check-ups, dental implants can last for decades, often even a lifetime. It is an investment in your health and quality of life.
- Protection of surrounding teeth: Unlike traditional bridges, it is not necessary to grind adjacent healthy teeth to serve as abutments. The implant is a separate unit that does not disrupt the integrity of other teeth.
- Bone preservation: The implant stimulates the jawbone similarly to the natural tooth root, preventing its loss (atrophy). This helps maintain the natural shape of the face and profile.
- Comfort and self-confidence: Implants are firmly anchored, there is no risk of their loosening or falling out. There is no need for worries associated with removable dentures (using fixation creams, pressure sores). You can laugh, talk and eat with complete confidence.
- Easy maintenance: Caring for dental implants is very similar to caring for your own teeth – regular brushing, interdental brushes and flossing, supplemented with professional dental hygiene.
Who are dental implants suitable for?
Dental implants are generally a suitable solution for most adult patients who have lost one, more or even all their teeth. The basic prerequisite is good general health and a sufficient amount of quality jawbone to anchor the implant. Key factors include:
- Sufficient bone volume and quality: For successful healing of the implant, sufficient bone height and width at the planned implantation site are necessary. In the case of bone deficiency, there are modern methods of bone augmentation (supplementation), such as guided bone regeneration or sinus lift (when implanting in the upper jaw). At Dobrý Dent, we perform a thorough 3D CBCT examination, which will show us exactly the condition of your bone and allow us to plan the optimal procedure.
- Healthy gums: Before implantation, it is necessary to cure any gum inflammation (gingivitis) or periodontitis. Healthy gums are key to the long-term success of your implant.
- Good overall health: Some chronic conditions (e.g., uncontrolled diabetes, severe immune system disorders) or treatments (e.g., radiation to the head and neck, certain osteoporosis medications) can affect the healing process and the success of your implant. It is important to inform your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medications you are taking.
- Not smoking: Smoking significantly increases the risk of complications and reduces the success of your implant. We recommend that you limit or ideally quit smoking at least during the healing period.
- Closing jaw growth: Implantation is usually not performed in patients whose jaws are not yet fully developed (typically under 18-20 years of age).
Each case is assessed individually. During your initial consultation at Dobrý Dent, we will perform a comprehensive examination, assess your situation, and discuss all options, benefits, and potential risks with you in detail.
Implantation process at Dobrý Dent: Step by step
At our clinic Dobrý Dent in Prague 5, we emphasize precision, safety and patient comfort at every stage of treatment. The process of inserting a dental implant usually includes the following steps:
- Introductory consultation and diagnostics: The first step is a detailed consultation with our experienced implantologist. We will discuss your expectations, medical history and perform a thorough clinical examination of the oral cavity. A key component is a modern 3D CBCT X-ray examination, which will provide us with a detailed three-dimensional image of your jawbone, showing the position of nerves and other important structures. Thanks to this, we can plan the placement of the implant with absolute precision. We also use an intraoral 3D scanner for digital impressions, which are more accurate and comfortable than traditional impression materials.
- Treatment planning: Based on the examination results, we will create an individual treatment plan that includes the type and size of the implant, the possible need for bone augmentation and the type of final prosthetic work. We will explain the entire procedure, the time schedule and the financial budget in detail.
- Surgical phase – implant placement: The implant placement itself takes place on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. At Dobrý Dent, we use the computer-controlled anesthesia system STA (Single Tooth Anesthesia), which ensures a completely painless procedure with minimal discomfort. We perform the procedure with maximum precision, often using an operating microscope, which allows us to work with perfect visibility and minimize invasiveness. The implant is inserted into a pre-prepared bed in the bone. In some cases, the wound may be sutured, in other cases the implant is left to heal under the mucosa or with a so-called healing roller.
- Healing (osseointegration): This is followed by a healing period, which usually lasts 3 to 6 months. During this time, the implant becomes firmly connected to the bone. The healing time is individual and depends on the quality of the bone and the patient’s overall health. During this time, you can have a temporary replacement.
- Placement of abutment and crown: After the implant has successfully healed, we proceed to the prosthetic phase. An abutment (pillar) is attached to the implant, on which the final crown, bridge or other prosthetic work is then placed. We make crowns from high-quality and aesthetic materials (most often all-ceramics) that perfectly imitate the appearance of a natural tooth. Again, we use digital impressions using a 3D scanner for maximum accuracy.
- Regular check-ups and dental hygiene: For the long-term success of the implant, regular check-ups with a dentist and professional dental hygiene at least twice a year are necessary.
Modern technology for your comfort and safety
At Dobrý Dent, we believe that investing in modern technology is an investment in the quality of care and satisfaction of our patients. When performing implants, we use:
- 3D CBCT X-ray: It allows us to obtain a detailed three-dimensional image of the jaws and accurately plan the position of the implant with respect to anatomical structures. It minimizes risks and increases the success of the procedure.
- Intraoral 3D scanner: It replaces unpleasant impressions. Digital impressions are faster, more comfortable and, above all, extremely accurate, which is key to producing a perfectly fitting crown or bridge.
- Operating microscope: Enlargement of the surgical field allows the doctor to work with maximum precision, more gentle on tissues and with a better overview. This contributes to faster healing and better results.
- Computer-controlled anesthesia STA: Ensures the application of anesthetic slowly and controlled, which eliminates the pain and unpleasant feeling of pressure associated with a traditional injection. The anesthesia is targeted only to the treated tooth, without the unpleasant feeling of numbness of half of the face.
Thanks to these technologies, the implantation process in our clinic is not only highly precise and safe, but also as pleasant as possible for you, our patients.
Dental implant care
The success of a dental implant depends not only on the precision of the procedure, but also on your follow-up care. Caring for dental implants is basically the same as caring for your own teeth, but it requires consistency:
- Regular cleaning: Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush and a quality toothpaste. Pay special attention to the area around the implant.
- Interdental hygiene: Daily use of interdental brushes and/or dental floss is absolutely crucial for removing plaque from places where a regular toothbrush cannot reach, especially around the neck of the implant.
- Professional dental hygiene: Visit our dental hygienist regularly (usually twice a year, as recommended by your doctor). This will perform a professional cleaning, remove tartar and plaque from hard-to-reach areas, and check the condition of the gums around the implant.
- Regular check-ups with your doctor: Have regular preventive check-ups with your dentist (implantologist), who will check the condition of the implant, bone, and surrounding tissues, often using control X-rays.
- Avoid smoking: Smoking negatively affects the blood supply to the gums and healing, thereby increasing the risk of inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis) and its possible loss.
With consistent care, you will ensure that your new dental implant will serve you reliably for many years and your smile will remain healthy and beautiful.
