Orthodontics (Braces)

What is orthodontics and what are its goals?
Orthodontics deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of irregularities of the teeth and jaws, known as malocclusion (improper bite). The goal is not only to improve the aesthetic appearance of the smile, although this is the primary motivation for many patients. Functional and health aspects are equally important, if not more important. Correctly positioned teeth and a correct bite allow for:
- More efficient chewing: Even distribution of chewing forces protects teeth from overloading and excessive wear.
- Easier oral hygiene: Straight teeth are much easier to clean than teeth that are crowded or rotated. This reduces the risk of tooth decay and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis).
- Correct pronunciation: The position of the teeth can also affect the articulation of certain sounds.
- Temporomandibular joint health: An incorrect bite can lead to overloading of the temporomandibular joints, which can manifest as headaches, ear pain, clicking or popping in the joint.
- Improvement of facial aesthetics: Orthodontic treatment can also positively affect the profile and overall harmony of the face.
- Increase in self-confidence: A beautiful smile undoubtedly contributes to a better sense of self and greater confidence in social and professional life.
Orthodontic treatment is therefore an investment not only in the beauty of your smile, but above all in your long-term health and quality of life.
Why choose orthodontic treatment? Key benefits
The decision to undergo orthodontic treatment brings a number of benefits that go beyond mere aesthetics. Here are the main reasons to opt for braces:
- Aesthetics and self-confidence: This is often the main motivation. Straight teeth and a harmonious smile significantly improve your appearance and can dramatically increase your self-confidence. You will no longer be embarrassed to smile in photos or when meeting people.
- Improved chewing and digestive function: A correct bite allows for more efficient grinding of food, which is the first step to proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.
- Prevention of dental problems: As already mentioned, straight teeth are easier to clean. This minimizes the risk of tooth decay in the interdental spaces and along the gums. It also reduces the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.
- Protecting teeth from wear: With an incorrect bite, some teeth can be overloaded, which leads to their faster wear, cracking or breaking. Orthodontics helps to distribute chewing pressure evenly.
- Solving problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ): Many problems with the temporomandibular joint, such as pain, grinding or limited mouth opening, can be related to an incorrect bite. Orthodontic treatment can alleviate or completely eliminate these problems.
- Better conditions for further treatment: In some cases, orthodontic preparation is necessary before the manufacture of bridges, crowns or implants in order to achieve an optimal and long-term stable result.
Orthodontic treatment at Dobrý Dent: Quality, technology and individual approach
At our dental clinic Dobrý Dent in Prague 5, we approach orthodontic treatment with the utmost care and emphasis on the individual needs of each patient. Since 2010, we have helped hundreds of patients achieve their dream smile and improve their oral health. Our philosophy is based on a combination of professional knowledge, state-of-the-art technology and an empathetic approach.
The key to successful and effective orthodontic treatment is precise diagnostics and planning. That is why at Dobrý Dent we use cutting-edge digital technologies:
- 3D Intraoral Scanner: Say goodbye to unpleasant impressions! Our modern intraoral scanner allows you to create a highly accurate digital 3D model of your teeth and gums in just a few minutes. This model serves as the basis for detailed analysis, treatment planning and the production of orthodontic appliances (e.g. invisible films). Patients appreciate the speed and comfort of this procedure. We can also show you a simulation of the treatment outcome before it begins.
- 3D CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography): In more complex cases or when related problems are suspected, we use CBCT X-rays. This provides a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth, roots, bones and jaw joints with minimal radiation exposure. Thanks to CBCT, we can accurately assess the position of the tooth roots, bone quality, jaw relationships and identify any anomalies, which is essential for safe and predictable treatment planning, especially in adult patients or before orthognathic surgery.
In addition to technology, we place great emphasis on patient comfort and safety. The entire treatment takes place in the modern and pleasant environment of our clinic in Anděl. To ensure maximum comfort even during any related procedures, we use technologies such as computer-controlled anesthesia STA, which ensures painless application of anesthetic. Our experienced team of orthodontists and assistants will support you throughout your treatment, explaining everything in detail and answering any questions you may have.
Types of braces: We find a solution for everyone
Today’s orthodontics offers a wide range of treatment options that differ in appearance, comfort, method of operation and price. At Dobrý Dent, after a thorough diagnosis and consultation of your preferences, we will recommend the most suitable type of braces for you.
Fixed (fixed) braces
They are a traditional and very effective method of straightening teeth. They consist of brackets glued to the teeth and a wire (arch), which is attached to the brackets and gradually moves the teeth into the desired position. They are suitable for solving even very complex defects.
- Metal braces: The classic, most well-known option. They are very durable, effective and the most affordable. Modern metal brackets are smaller and less noticeable than before.
- Ceramic or sapphire braces: An aesthetic option of fixed braces. Clasps are made of a transparent or tooth-colored material, making them much less visible than metal ones. They are especially popular with adult patients who are concerned about aesthetics during treatment. Sapphire braces are completely transparent and are among the least noticeable fixed appliances.
- Self-ligating braces: A modern type of fixed braces (e.g. Damon system) where the wire is not held in the clasp by a rubber band, but by a special flap. This reduces friction, allows for the use of gentler forces, and can lead to faster tooth movement, potentially shorter overall treatment time, and fewer check-ups. They can be metal or ceramic.
Aligners (Invisible braces)
A revolutionary and increasingly popular method of orthodontic treatment, often referred to as “invisible braces” (the most famous system is Invisalign, but there are others). Treatment is performed using a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays (aligners), which the patient wears and gradually replaces (usually after 1-2 weeks).
- High aesthetics: The trays are almost invisible, which is a major advantage for many patients.
- Comfort: They are smooth, without wires or clasps that could irritate the cheeks or tongue.
- Removable: The aligners are removed for eating and brushing teeth. This allows for unlimited food choices and easy oral hygiene.
- Predictability: Thanks to digital planning (using a 3D scanner), you can see a virtual simulation of the course and outcome of the treatment before it even begins.
- Need for cooperation: The success of the treatment depends on consistent wearing of the aligners (at least 20-22 hours a day).
The choice between fixed braces and aligners depends on the type and severity of the defect, the patient’s lifestyle, his preferences and financial capabilities. Our specialist will explain in detail the advantages and disadvantages of each option in your specific case.
Course of orthodontic treatment at Dobrý Dent
Orthodontic treatment is a process that requires time and patient cooperation. At Dobrý Dent, we make sure that the entire process is as clear and comfortable as possible for the patient.
- Introductory consultation and diagnostics: The first step is a non-binding consultation with our orthodontist. We will discuss your wishes and expectations, perform a thorough examination of the oral cavity. For an accurate diagnosis, we will prepare the necessary documents – digital photographs, X-rays (OPG, or CBCT) and digital impressions using a 3D intraoral scanner.
- Preparation of a treatment plan: Based on the data obtained, the orthodontist will analyze your situation and draw up an individual treatment plan. This includes the diagnosis, the proposed type of braces, the expected duration of treatment, the individual phases and, of course, the financial budget. We will explain everything to you in detail, present possible alternatives and answer your questions. For aligners, we will show you a digital visualization of the treatment (ClinCheck).
- Braces fitting: After you agree to the treatment plan, the chosen type of braces is fitted. For fixed braces, the brackets are glued to the teeth and the first arch is inserted. For aligners, you will receive the first set of foils and instructions for wearing and replacing them. We will instruct you in detail about proper oral hygiene and care for the braces.
- Regular check-ups: During the active phase of treatment, regular check-ups at our clinic are necessary (usually every 4-8 weeks for fixed braces, intervals may be longer for aligners). During check-ups, the orthodontist monitors the progress of the treatment, makes the necessary adjustments (replacement of arches, activation) and checks the condition of the teeth and gums. Your active cooperation (observing hygiene, wearing elastic bands if prescribed, wearing aligners) is key to the success and compliance with the planned duration of treatment.
- Removing braces and retention phase: After achieving the desired position of the teeth, the joyful moment of removing the fixed braces or ending the wearing of active aligners comes. However, the treatment does not end there! The very important retention phase follows, the aim of which is to keep the teeth in the new position and prevent them from returning to their original position. Removable retention appliances (plates or foils, usually worn at night) and/or fixed retainers (a thin wire glued to the inside of the front teeth) are used for this. The duration and type of retention are individual.
The duration of active orthodontic treatment usually ranges from a few months (for simpler cases or aligner treatment) to 2-3 years for more complex defects treated with fixed braces. The retention phase is long-term, often lifelong (especially with fixed retainers).
Who is orthodontic treatment suitable for? Age does not matter!
There is a myth that braces are only for children and adolescents. This is not true! Orthodontic treatment is suitable for patients of practically any age, as long as they have healthy teeth and gums (any cavities or gingivitis must be treated before starting orthodontic treatment). More and more adult patients are deciding to straighten their teeth, whether for aesthetic or health reasons.
For children, it is ideal to have their first orthodontic consultation around the age of 7, when the first permanent teeth erupt. Early diagnosis allows for the detection of some defects and, if necessary, to address them with simpler interceptive treatment, which can prevent the need for more complex treatment at a later age. However, the main part of orthodontic treatment usually takes place during adolescence, when the permanent teeth erupt.
Adult patients often choose less noticeable options for braces, such as ceramic braces or invisible aligners. Treatment for adults can sometimes take a little longer than for children because the bone tissue is no longer developing, but the results are just as effective and stable. At Dobrý Dent, we have extensive experience treating adult patients and understand their specific needs and requirements.
