Pediatric dentistry

Why is pediatric dentistry so important?
Many parents mistakenly believe that taking care of temporary (baby) teeth is not that important because they will fall out anyway. However, the opposite is true. The health of baby teeth has a fundamental influence on the proper development of the jaws, the position of permanent teeth and the overall health of the child. Neglected care can lead to a number of problems:
- Tooth decay: Baby teeth are more susceptible to decay due to thinner enamel. Untreated decay can cause pain, inflammation, and even lead to premature tooth loss.
- Problems with eruption of permanent teeth: Premature loss of a baby tooth can cause the surrounding teeth to shift and lack of space for the permanent tooth to erupt properly, often requiring later orthodontic treatment.
- Infections and overall health: Extensive decay and inflammation in the mouth can negatively affect a child’s overall health, including eating and sleeping.
- Habit formation: Regular visits to the dentist from childhood help build a positive relationship with oral hygiene and reduce fear of dental treatment in adulthood.
- Correct pronunciation: Healthy and correctly positioned teeth are important for the proper development of speech and articulation.
At Dobrý Dent, we place great emphasis on prevention. We believe that with timely and regular care, most problems can be prevented. Our goal is not only to treat, but above all to teach children and their parents how to properly care for their oral cavity and keep their teeth healthy throughout their lives.
First visit to the dentist: When and how?
A common question for parents is when to visit a dentist with their child for the first time. Experts recommend having the first preventive check-up around the child’s first birthday, or no later than six months after the first tooth erupts. This first visit is primarily informative and preventive in nature.
At Dobrý Dent, we understand that the first meeting with a dentist is crucial for a child. That is why we try to make it as pleasant and calm as possible. We call this process adaptation. The child has the opportunity to get acquainted with the office environment, the tools (which we will introduce to them in a playful way) and the staff. The doctor will check the condition of the erupting teeth, advise parents on the correct brushing technique and answer all questions regarding oral hygiene, nutrition or the use of fluoride products. The goal is for the child to have a positive experience and not be afraid of further visits.
Our modern and pleasantly furnished premises in Prague 5 are designed to make children and their parents feel relaxed and safe. The empathetic and patient approach of our team is a matter of course.
Pediatric dentistry services at Dobrý Dent
Our clinic provides a comprehensive range of services in the field of pediatric dentistry, always taking into account the age and individual needs of the child:
- Preventive examinations: Regular check-ups (usually every 6 months) are the basis of prevention. We monitor the development of teeth, detecting any cavities or other problems in time.
- Professional dental hygiene for children: Gentle removal of dental plaque and tartar, tooth polishing and instruction on proper cleaning adapted to the child’s age.
- Fluoridation: Application of fluoride varnishes or gels strengthens tooth enamel and increases its resistance to decay. It is a painless and very effective preventive procedure.
- Fissure sealing: Fissures are deep grooves on the biting surfaces of the molars, where plaque easily settles and decay occurs. Preventive filling of these grooves with a special material (sealant) significantly reduces the risk of caries. It is performed mainly on freshly erupted permanent molars.
- Treatment of tooth decay: If caries have already occurred, it is necessary to remove it as soon as possible and as carefully as possible and to provide the tooth with a filling. We use modern filling materials (often white – photocomposite) and techniques that minimize the child’s discomfort. For children who are already cooperating better, and in indicated cases, we can also use painless computer-controlled anesthesia STA.
- Treatment after dental injuries: Children are active and dental injuries are no exception. We provide quick and professional assistance in case of fractures, bumps or knocked-out teeth (baby and permanent).
- Tooth extraction: We only perform extractions in necessary cases, for example in case of severely damaged or „dead“ baby teeth that could jeopardize the development of permanent teeth, or for orthodontic reasons.
- Advice: We provide comprehensive advice to parents regarding the correct technique of brushing teeth, selection of appropriate tools (brush, toothpaste), eating habits and prevention of bad habits (e.g. thumb sucking).
- Monitoring the development of teeth and jaws: We regularly check the correct eruption of teeth and the development of the bite. If necessary, we will recommend a consultation with an orthodontist in a timely manner.
Modern technology for comfort and precision even for children
At Dobrý Dent, we invest in modern technologies that allow us to provide care at the highest level, even for our youngest patients. These technologies increase not only the accuracy and quality of treatment, but above all the comfort and safety of children.
- Computer-controlled anesthesia STA (The Wand): Fear of injections is common in children. The STA system allows local anesthesia to be applied almost painlessly. The computer controls the pressure and speed of anesthetic administration, which eliminates the unpleasant feeling of pressure and pain associated with a classic injection. It is an ideal solution for anxious children.
- Digital radiography (including CBCT): We use modern digital X-ray machines that significantly reduce radiation exposure compared to classic X-rays. The images are immediately available in digital form, which speeds up diagnostics. For more complex cases, we also have a 3D CBCT X-ray available, which provides a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth and jaws, important for example when planning more complex procedures or diagnosing developmental anomalies.
- Intraoral 3D scanner: Unpleasant impressions of teeth using impression materials are a thing of the past. Our intraoral scanner creates an accurate digital 3D model of the teeth and gums in a few moments. It is fast, convenient and much more pleasant for children. The model can be shown immediately on the screen, which helps to better explain the situation to parents and child.
- Operating microscope: Using a dental microscope allows us to work with maximum precision even in the smallest details. Enlarging the surgical field is key for high-quality treatment of tooth decay, endodontic treatment (root canal treatment, although less common in children) and other procedures even on small children’s teeth. It increases the success of treatment and minimizes the risk of complications.
Thanks to these technologies, we can offer treatment that is not only high-quality and precise, but also as stress-free and unpleasant as possible for your child.
Our approach to pediatric patients: Patience and trust
The success of pediatric dentistry does not only depend on technology and expertise, but above all on the right approach to the child. At Dobrý Dent, we rely on:
- Patience and empathy: Every child is different and requires an individual approach. We are patient, listen to the concerns of the child and parents, and try to create an atmosphere of trust.
- Age-appropriate communication: We speak to children in a language they understand. We explain what we are going to do, using simple and positive formulations (e.g. „put a tooth to sleep“ instead of „give an injection“, „spray“ instead of „drill“).
- Positive motivation: We praise children for their cooperation and bravery. A small reward at the end of the treatment can help create a positive association.
- Gradual Familiarization (Adaptation): Especially for very young or anxious children, we choose a gradual approach. The first visits can be shorter and focused only on familiarization with the environment and simple tasks.
- Parental involvement: Cooperation with parents is key. We inform them about the course of the treatment and give them advice on how to prepare and support their child for the visit.
Our team has extensive experience in treating children of all ages, including those who are uncooperative or have specific needs. Our goal is not only to solve the current problem, but above all to build a long-term positive relationship with dental care in the child and relieve them of their fear of the dentist.
