Sandblasting of teeth (Air Flow) – Restore natural beauty and health to your teeth

What exactly is Air Flow teeth sandblasting?
The Air Flow method uses a special device that applies a mixture of very fine powder (usually based on sodium bicarbonate or finer glycine for more sensitive areas), water and air to the surface of the teeth under controlled pressure. This stream of microparticles gently but effectively „blasts“ the tooth surface and removes all settled impurities – pigmentation, plaque and incipient tartar.
Unlike traditional mechanical removal of plaque and pigmentation using scalers and curettes, the Air Flow method:
- Very gentle: Does not damage tooth enamel or soft tissues. Fine powder particles only affect surface dirt.
- Highly effective: It can clean even places where a regular toothbrush or dental floss cannot reach, such as interdental spaces, pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces or around orthodontic brackets.
- Fast and comfortable: The sandblasting of the entire dentition itself usually takes only a few minutes and is completely painless for the patient. You can feel light pressure and a water spray, or a slightly salty or sweet taste of the powder.
- Safe: The powders used are biocompatible and safe for the body.
At the Dobrý Dent clinic, we use the most modern Air Flow devices, which allow precise adjustment of the pressure and amount of powder for maximum efficiency and patient comfort. Our experienced dental hygienists are specially trained to work with this technology and guarantee precise and safe execution.
The main advantages of sandblasting teeth (Air Flow)
Regularly including sandblasting in your dental hygiene brings a number of benefits:
- Removal of surface pigmentation: It effectively copes with stains from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco, some medications (e.g. chlorhexidine) and food dyes. Your teeth will be visibly brighter and regain their natural shade.
- Thorough removal of dental plaque: Plaque is the main cause of tooth decay and gingivitis. Air Flow removes it even from hard-to-reach places, thus significantly contributing to the prevention of these diseases.
- Improvement of gum health: By removing plaque from the gum line and shallow periodontal pockets, Air Flow helps reduce gum inflammation (gingivitis) and prevent the development of periodontitis. For deeper cleaning under the gums, special glycine-based powders can be used.
- Perfectly smooth tooth surface: After treatment, the teeth are beautifully smooth, which makes it difficult for plaque and pigmentation to re-settle. You will have a pleasant feeling of cleanliness.
- Preparation for further treatment: A clean tooth surface is ideal for teeth whitening (increases its effectiveness), applying fluoride varnishes, sealing fissures or before prosthetic work or applying braces.
- Aesthetic benefit: Immediate improvement in the appearance of the smile without the need for invasive procedures.
- Painlessness and comfort: The treatment is also suitable for patients with sensitive teeth.
It is important to note that sandblasting does not remove internal tooth discoloration and does not replace tooth whitening. This is a method of removing external, surface impurities and pigmentation.
Who is teeth sandblasting suitable for?
Sandblasting teeth using the Air Flow method is suitable for practically anyone who cares about the health and aesthetics of their teeth. We especially recommend this treatment:
- Smokers and regular coffee, tea or red wine drinkers.
- Patients with tight interdental spaces or crowded teeth, where it is difficult to maintain perfect hygiene.
- Patients with fixed braces, where plaque and pigmentation settle more easily around brackets and wires.
- Before planned teeth whitening to achieve better results.
- Before the installation of fixed prosthetic work (crowns, bridges).
- As part of regular professional dental hygiene (usually 1-2 times a year, depending on individual needs).
- Anyone who desires the feeling of perfectly clean and smooth teeth and a brighter smile.
However, there are also situations when sandblasting is not recommended or requires increased caution. Contraindications may include serious respiratory diseases (e.g. asthma), certain allergies (especially to the powder components) or acute inflammatory conditions in the oral cavity. It is always important to inform our dental hygienist about your overall health.
How is teeth sandblasting done at Dobrý Dent?
At our clinic Dobrý Dent in Prague 5, we emphasize patient comfort and safety during every treatment. Sandblasting is part of a comprehensive dental hygiene program that usually includes the following steps:
- Initial examination and consultation: Our dental hygienist will first assess the condition of your oral cavity, level of hygiene, presence of plaque, tartar, and pigmentation. She will discuss your expectations with you and answer any questions you may have.
- Tartar removal: If hard tartar is present, it is first removed using an ultrasonic scaler or hand tools. Sandblasting alone will not remove massive tartar deposits.
- Sandblasting itself (Air Flow): The hygienist carefully applies a stream of a mixture of powder, water, and air to all surfaces of the teeth, including the interdental spaces and gum line. We use a powerful suction system to minimize aerosol dispersion and ensure your comfort. The patient’s eyes are protected by special glasses.
- Rinse and check: After sandblasting is completed, the oral cavity is thoroughly rinsed with water. The hygienist checks the result and makes sure that all pigmentation and plaque have been removed.
- Fluoridation (optional): To strengthen the tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity, a fluoride gel or varnish can be applied at the end.
- Instruction and recommendations: The hygienist will provide you with advice on the correct technique for brushing your teeth and recommend suitable home care products to ensure that the effect of the treatment lasts as long as possible. They will also advise you on what foods and drinks to avoid shortly after treatment (see below).
A full dental hygiene session, including sandblasting, usually takes 45-60 minutes, depending on the initial condition of the teeth and the extent of care required.

What to expect after teeth whitening?
Immediately after the Air Flow treatment, your teeth may be slightly more sensitive to heat, but this is a temporary condition. It is important to follow the so-called „white diet“ for at least 2-3 hours, but ideally 12-24 hours after the procedure. During this time, the tooth surface is more susceptible to re-staining.
We recommend avoiding:
- Coffee, tea (black, green, fruit)
- Red wine
- Colored sodas and juices (cola, Fanta, Kofola, fruit juices)
- Fruits and vegetables with intense color (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, beetroot, curry, turmeric)
- Dark sauces (soy, balsamic vinegar)
- Smoking
- Colored mouthwashes
On the contrary, light foods and drinks are suitable: water, milk, white yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, light pastries, rice, pasta, chicken, fish.
By following these recommendations and practicing regular, consistent oral hygiene at home, you will ensure that the effect of sparkling clean teeth after sandblasting lasts as long as possible.
