Dental prostheses

What are dentures and when do you need them?
A denture, professionally called prosthetic work, is any artificial replacement for missing teeth or their parts. Its main goal is to restore the proper function of the chewing apparatus (biting, speaking) while ensuring an aesthetically satisfactory result. The need for a denture may arise for various reasons:
- Loss of tooth(s): As a result of an injury, advanced dental caries, periodontitis or other disease. Even the loss of a single tooth can lead to the displacement of surrounding teeth and other complications.
- Extensive tooth damage: If a tooth is so damaged by decay, injury or wear that it cannot be reliably and long-term repaired with a standard filling.
- Aesthetic reasons: In some cases, prosthetic work, such as veneers or crowns, can also address significant aesthetic deficiencies (shape, color, position of the teeth).
- Congenital defects: Missing teeth or their anomalies can also be congenital.
Timely treatment of missing or damaged teeth is key to maintaining overall oral health and preventing other problems, such as bite problems, overloading of the remaining teeth or problems with the temporomandibular joint.
Types of dentures: Fixed and removable solutions
We divide dentures into two basic categories – fixed (firmly cemented in the mouth) and removable (the patient can remove them themselves). At the Dobrý Dent clinic, we offer a comprehensive range of both types, always with an emphasis on quality, function and aesthetics.
Fixed dentures
Fixed dentures are firmly connected to the remaining teeth or dental implants. The patient perceives them as their own teeth, providing maximum comfort and stability when biting and speaking. Their manufacture requires precise work and often grinding some teeth.
- Dental crowns: A crown is a kind of „shell“ that is placed on a worn-out damaged tooth or on the abutment of a dental implant. It restores its original shape, size, strength and appearance. We use high-quality materials, most often all-ceramic crowns (highly aesthetic, metal-free) or metal-ceramic crowns (the metal internal structure ensures high durability, the surface is covered with tooth-colored ceramics). Thanks to the use of the operating microscope and intraoral 3D scanner at Dobrý Dent, we achieve maximum precision in tooth preparation and crown production, which guarantees its long life and perfect fit.
- Dental bridges: A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of several crowns connected together. The outermost crowns (abutments) are placed on the ground teeth adjacent to the gap (abutments), and between them are placed pontic elements replacing the missing teeth. An alternative is a bridge anchored on dental implants, which does not require grinding healthy teeth. Precise planning using 3D CBCT X-ray and digital impressions from a 3D scanner allow us to design and manufacture functional and aesthetically perfect bridges.
- Veneers: These are thin ceramic slices that are glued to the front surface of teeth, especially incisors and canines. They are used mainly for aesthetic reasons – to correct the color, shape, size or minor irregularities of the teeth. They require minimal grinding of the enamel.
- Implant-anchored replacements: Dental implants are the most modern way to replace lost teeth. They are titanium „screws“ inserted into the jawbone, which serve as artificial roots. Crowns or bridges are then attached to them using special attachments (abutments). This solution is very stable, aesthetic and protects the surrounding healthy teeth, as they do not need to be ground. At Dobrý Dent, we have extensive experience in implantology and use CBCT for precise planning of implant placement.
The advantage of fixed dentures is their stability, comfort when eating and speaking, and high aesthetics. The disadvantage may be the need to grind healthy teeth (for bridges) and a higher purchase price.
Removable dentures
The patient can put on and take off removable dentures themselves. They are used primarily in cases where a large number of teeth are missing or when a fixed prosthesis cannot be made for some reason (e.g. lack of quality abutment teeth, financial reasons, patient’s health).
- Partial removable dentures: They replace only some of the missing teeth in the jaw. They consist of a resin body in the color of the gum, artificial teeth and anchoring elements (clasps) with which the prosthesis is attached to the remaining natural teeth. A more modern variant is skeletal dentures, which have a metal structure (skeleton). They are more subtle, stronger and better transmit chewing pressure. Their anchoring can also be solved using so-called plug-in joints, which are more aesthetically advantageous (the clasps are not visible).
- Total removable dentures („clap“): They replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw. They consist of a resin base that copies the shape of the gums and palate (in the upper jaw), and artificial teeth. Their stability depends on the shape of the jaws and adhesion to the mucous membrane. Stability is often worse in the lower jaw. To significantly improve the stability of total dentures, especially in the lower jaw, it is possible to use mini implants or standard implants with special anchoring elements (e.g. the Locators system), onto which the denture „snaps“. This significantly increases patient comfort.
The advantage of removable dentures is usually a lower price and the possibility of replacing a large number of teeth at once. The disadvantage may be less stability (especially with complete dentures), the need to remove and clean the denture at night, and for some patients, the psychological aspect of wearing „artificial teeth“. At Dobrý Dent, we always pay attention to the best possible functionality and aesthetics even with removable solutions and look for ways to maximize their stability and comfort.
The process of making dentures at Dobrý Dent
Making a quality dental prosthesis is a process that requires careful planning, precise execution and close cooperation between the doctor, the patient and the dental laboratory. In our clinic in Prague 5, we emphasize every detail:
- Introductory consultation and examination: It all starts with a thorough interview about your ideas and needs. We will conduct a comprehensive examination of the condition of your teeth, gums and jaws. An essential part is an X-ray examination, we often use a modern 3D CBCT X-ray, which will provide us with a detailed three-dimensional image of the jaws and enable precise planning, especially for implants or more complex bridges.
- Diagnosis and treatment plan: Based on the examination, we will establish a diagnosis and propose all possible solution options, including their advantages, disadvantages and financial requirements. Together we will choose the most suitable option for your specific situation. The planning also includes a digital smile design (Digital Smile Design), where you can see the expected result before the treatment begins.
- Preparatory phase: Before the actual fabrication of the restoration, it is often necessary to perform preparatory procedures – treatment of tooth decay, endodontic treatment (root canal treatment), treatment of periodontitis, extraction of unsuitable teeth or insertion of dental implants. We perform all these procedures with maximum care, using an operating microscope for perfect visualization and accuracy, and of course with the option of painless application of anesthesia using the STA system.
- Tooth preparation (grinding): For fixed restorations (crowns, bridges), it is necessary to carefully grind the teeth on which the restoration will be placed (abutments) into the desired shape. We perform this step under the magnification of an operating microscope to remove only the necessary amount of tooth tissue and ensure a perfect fit of the future restoration.
- Impression: To produce an accurate restoration, we need a perfect impression of the situation in your mouth. At Dobrý Dent, we use a modern intraoral 3D scanner. This procedure is much more comfortable for the patient than classic impressions using impression materials (no gag reflex), and at the same time provides highly accurate digital data for the dental laboratory. Digital impressions increase the accuracy of the final work and shorten the production time.
- Production in a dental laboratory: We cooperate only with proven Czech dental laboratories that use certified, biocompatible materials and the latest technologies (e.g. CAD/CAM milling). Based on digital or classic impressions and our instructions, the laboratory technician will make your dental restoration. For more extensive work, a design test or so-called „raw state“ test may be necessary (before final completion).
- Installation and adjustments: We carefully test the finished restoration in the mouth, checking its fit, bite, color and shape. We will make any minor adjustments directly in the office. For fixed restorations, they are then firmly cemented with special adhesive cements. For removable restorations, we will instruct you on proper installation, removal and care.
- Instruction and check-up: After the restoration is installed, we will provide you with detailed instructions on proper oral hygiene and care of the restoration so that it serves you for as long as possible. We will arrange a check-up appointment to make sure that everything is in order and that you are fully satisfied with the result.

Denture care
Proper care is key to the longevity and functionality of your dentures, whether fixed or removable. Of course, consistent oral hygiene is the basis:
- Fixed dentures (crowns, bridges): Clean them as carefully as your own teeth – twice a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Pay special attention to the gumline area around the crown. Don’t forget the spaces between your teeth – use interdental brushes and dental floss (special floss with a pointed end is suitable for cleaning under bridges). Visit your dental hygienist regularly.
- Removable dentures: Remove the denture after each meal and rinse with water. At least once a day (ideally in the evening), clean the denture thoroughly with a special brush and cleaning gel or soap (regular toothpaste may be too abrasive). At night, usually place the denture in a container with water or a special solution (as recommended by your doctor). Don’t forget to clean your remaining teeth and gums.
Regular preventive check-ups with your dentist (usually twice a year) are necessary to check the condition of the denture, surrounding teeth and tissues.
