Removable dentures: A comfortable and aesthetic solution to tooth loss

What are removable dentures and when are they appropriate?
A removable denture is a structure that replaces missing teeth and the adjacent gum tissue and bone. As the name suggests, the patient can remove it from the mouth and put it back on, which is especially important for cleaning purposes. There are two basic types:
- Partial removable dentures: They are used in cases where the patient is missing only some teeth, but still has enough of their own, strong teeth in the jaw to serve as support for the denture.
- Total removable dentures: They are intended for patients who have lost all the teeth in one or both jaws.
The indications for a removable denture can vary. It is often chosen in situations where:
- The patient has lost a large number of teeth and it is not possible to make a fixed bridge.
- For various reasons (medical, financial, anatomical), implantation is not suitable.
- The patient wants a solution that is less invasive than implants.
- A temporary solution is needed before making a definitive fixed work (e.g. after extractions or during the healing of implants).
- The condition of the bone or the patient’s general health does not allow for another solution.
At Dobrý Dent, we always carefully consider all options and together with the patient we look for the best solution tailored to their needs and expectations. Thanks to our experience and modern equipment, such as 3D CBCT X-ray for detailed imaging of bone structures, we are able to accurately assess the situation and propose the optimal procedure.
Types of removable dentures and their specifics
Modern dentistry offers several types of removable dentures, which differ in material, anchoring method and wearing comfort. At Dobrý Dent, we work with proven and the latest types to ensure maximum satisfaction of our patients.
1. Total dentures
They replace all teeth in the jaw. They consist of a resin base that imitates the gum, and artificial teeth. In the upper jaw, the denture covers the entire palate, which ensures its stability thanks to adhesion and vacuum. In the lower jaw, stability is ensured primarily by the shape of the prosthetic bed and the cooperation of the tongue and cheek muscles. Making a high-quality total denture requires great precision and experience from both the doctor and technician. At Dobrý Dent, we use modern materials and techniques for maximum accuracy of impressions, and possibly a 3D intraoral scanner, which allows digital impressions without unpleasant substances in the mouth. This leads to better adaptation of the prosthesis and greater patient comfort.
Advantages: Restoration of chewing function, aesthetics and speech in an edentulous jaw. Relatively affordable solution.
Disadvantages: Need for an adaptation period, may initially affect taste perception (especially the upper prosthesis), requires careful hygiene, may require adjustments (rebasing) over time due to changes in the bone.
2. Partial removable dentures
They replace only some of the missing teeth. They are anchored to the remaining natural teeth using various elements.
- Replacements with cast clasps (skeletal): They have a metal structure (usually made of chromium-cobalt alloy) that is thin, strong and well transmits chewing pressure. They are attached to the remaining teeth using precisely cast clasps. These restorations are generally considered more comfortable and gentler on the remaining teeth and tissues than resin restorations. They minimize gum and palate coverage, which contributes to better taste perception and less irritation of the mucous membranes. At Dobrý Dent, we pay attention to the precise design of the metal structure and clasps to ensure optimal stability and minimal visibility of the clasps.
- Resin restorations with wire clasps: They are a simpler and cheaper option. The base is made entirely of resin and is attached to the teeth using bent wire clasps. They are often used as a temporary solution. Their disadvantages may be less stability, greater volume in the mouth and potential irritation of the gums.
- Restorations with plug-in joints (attachments): They are a highly aesthetic solution because they do not have visible clasps. Anchoring is ensured by special „locks“ (plug-in connections), one part of which is placed on a crown or bridge fixed on the own tooth (or implant) and the other part is part of a removable prosthesis. This solution provides excellent stability and aesthetics, but requires preparation (often crowning) of the abutment teeth. At Dobrý Dent, we have extensive experience with this type of prosthesis and use working under a microscope to ensure maximum accuracy when preparing teeth and placing crowns with plug-in connections.
3. Hybrid prosthesis (Overdentures)
This is a special type of total or partial prosthesis that is additionally stabilized using several remaining tooth roots (treated and equipped with special attachments) or more often using dental implants. Implants (usually 2-4 in the jaw) are equipped with special pillars (e.g. ball attachments, locators or a bar) onto which the prosthesis is “snapped”. This solution dramatically increases the stability and comfort of the prosthesis, especially in the lower jaw, where the stability of the overall prosthesis is often problematic. The patient can bite better and feels more confident. Planning hybrid prosthesis on implants requires precise diagnostics, for which we at Dobrý Dent use 3D CBCT X-ray, allowing for precise planning of the implant position with regard to the quality of the bone and anatomical structure.
The process of making removable dentures at Dobrý Dent
Making a quality removable prosthesis is a process that requires several visits and close cooperation between the doctor, patient and dental technician. At Dobrý Dent, we emphasize precision in every step:
- Initial consultation and examination: We will assess the condition of the oral cavity, remaining teeth and bone (including a possible X-ray or CBCT examination). We will discuss your ideas, needs and treatment options. We will explain the advantages and disadvantages of individual types of prosthesis.
- Impression: To make an accurate model of your jaws, we will take impressions. At Dobrý Dent, we prefer modern methods – in addition to high-quality impression materials, we also use a 3D intraoral scanner. This digital impression is not only more accurate, but also significantly more comfortable for the patient, because the unpleasant feeling of the impression material in the mouth disappears. Digital data also enables better communication with the laboratory and more accurate production of the prosthesis.
- Determination of intermaxillary relationships: We record the correct position of the upper and lower jaws relative to each other, which is crucial for the correct function of the prosthesis.
- Testing the prosthesis model in the mouth: In this phase, we test a wax model of the future prosthesis with the built-in teeth. We check the bite, stability, phonetics (pronunciation) and, above all, aesthetics – the shape, color and position of the teeth. Together with you, we will fine-tune all the details so that the result matches your ideas.
- Delivery of the finished prosthesis: After final processing in the laboratory, we will hand over the prosthesis to you. We will check its exact placement, instruct you on proper use, cleaning and care. We will make any minor adjustments for maximum comfort immediately. To ensure the painlessness of any adjustments or preparatory procedures (e.g. grinding teeth for braces), we use the computer-controlled anesthesia STA system, which ensures comfortable and painless administration of anesthetic.
- Check-up visits: After the restoration is delivered, regular check-ups are important, during which we monitor tissue adaptation, the function of the restoration, and make any corrections.
Care of removable dentures and oral cavity
Proper care is key to the longevity of your dentures and your oral health:
- Cleaning your dentures: Remove your dentures after each meal and rinse them with water. Clean them thoroughly at least once a day (ideally twice) with a soft toothbrush and a special denture cleaner (do not use regular toothpaste, it can be too abrasive).
- Cleaning your mouth: Even after losing your teeth, it is still important to take care of your gums, tongue and palate. Gently massage them with a soft toothbrush to remove plaque and stimulate blood flow. If you have a partial denture, take the utmost care in cleaning the remaining teeth, especially those on which the denture rests.
- Storing the denture: When you are not wearing the denture (e.g. overnight, as recommended by your doctor), keep it moist, ideally in clean water or a special solution, to prevent it from deforming.
- Regular check-ups: Visit your dentist at Dobrý Dent regularly (usually every 6-12 months). The doctor will check the condition of the denture, its placement (the mucosa and bone change over time) and the condition of the oral cavity. He or she will detect any problems in time and can make the necessary adjustments (e.g. rebase – adjustment of the denture base).
- Handling: Handle the denture with care to prevent it from falling and getting damaged. When cleaning, hold it over a sink filled with water or over a soft towel.
